Red Diamondback Rattlesnake

The record for this species measured a little over 5 feet in length, but most adults will range between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 feet. Overall, it is reddish brown, with distinctive diamond-shaped patches on the topside of its body. Its coloration makes it easy to recognize. This Diamondback also has wide light and dark bands around its tail that resemble a raccoon's tail.

The Red Diamondback in my experience tends to be mello and non-aggressive. If you encounter one, it will probably not rattle unless you torment it. It prefers to lie quietly and hope you won't see it. This rattlesnake is found all over Orange County.
