MARK SCHILLING OF GARDEN GROVE HIGH SCHOOL
nominated by John LoeschhornThe California State Track Meet of Fri.-Sat.
June 2-3, 1972, held at Mitchell Field, Oroville, featured Mark Schilling
of Garden Grove High School. In this meet Mark ran 4:05.4 breaking the
record of 4:07.0 set by Tim Danielson, of Chula Vista High School in
1966. Prior to this, Tim Danielson had become the third high school
runner to break the four minute barrier in the One Mile Run following
Jim Ryan and Marty Liquori. To date only one other high school runner,
Alan Webb of South Lakes High School, in Virginia, has managed to run
a mile in less than 4:00, running 3:59.86 in an indoor meet in 2001.
No one has broken Mark Schilling's California State High School Meet
Record to date; Ryan Hall of Big Bear Lake could do it this year.
