 John gets splashed with Champagne as he wins the Pacific Association of the AAU Championship Marathon, Cupertino, California, April 7, 1974. John's time of 2:32:51 was almost 6 minutes under the previous record for the very hilly course. The race was sponsored by the Paul Masson Winery, which explains the Champagne shower at the finish. Eight weeks later, on June 2, 1974 John ran 2:24:22 to place 11th in National AAU Championships on another very hilly course in Yonkers, New York. |
